The education and research activities of the Railway Engineering section of Delft University of Technology concentrate on the integral short- and long-time behaviour of railway structures and components under traffic loads. PhD research mainly concentrates on dynamic and degradation behaviour of infrastructural components due to dynamic loads, applied by (high-speed) passenger trains or intensive freight transport, and related maintenance, inspection and diagnosis issues. There is also historically (prof. Joost Kalker) a strong focus on the fundamental development of the field of contact mechanics, to gain more insight into phenomena occurring in the contact patch between train wheels and the rails. Besides, experimental or numerical research is carried out for public transport companies and for the industry.
